Real Statistics Resource Pack

The Real Statistics Resource Pack contains a variety of supplemental functions and data analysis tools not provided by Excel. These complement the standard Excel capabilities and make it easier for you to perform the statistical analyses described in the rest of this website.

We now explain how to download and install the Real Statistics Resource Pack for use with Excel 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021 or 365 on Windows. If you are using Excel 2007 click here. If you are using Excel 2003 or a prior version of Excel click here. Finally, if you are using Excel for the Macintosh click here.

Keep in mind that there are also two versions of Excel, at least for Excel 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021 and 365, the 32-bit version and the 64-bit version. Most people use the 32-bit version. The Real Statistics Resource Pack works in both versions of Excel.

Download

Real Statistics Resource Pack for Excel 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021 or 365 for Windows

Two versions of the software are available. The first provides help support (via Insert Function fx) for Real Statistics worksheet functions but can slow down certain Excel operations. The second version omits this support but does not degrade Excel operations.

Both versions of the software are compatible with all Windows releases of Excel from 2010 until the present. After downloading the software make sure that you install the software as described below.

Downloading either resource pack means that you accept the License Agreement.

Solver Installation

Before trying to install the Real Statistics Resource Pack make sure that Excel’s Solver is installed on your computer. You can check this as follows:

  1. Open up a blank Excel spreadsheet
  2. Press Alt-TI (i.e. hold down the Alt key and press the T and I keys).
  3. On the dialog box that appears make sure that the Solver add-in is checked. If not, check it and click on the OK button.
  4. If the Solver add-in was not checked you need to close the Excel file before proceeding to the Real Statistics installation.

You can also accomplish step #2 by selecting Developer > Add-ins|Excel Add-ins.

Real Statistics Installation

Once you have downloaded the Resource Pack and made sure that Solver is installed, you need to install the Real Statistics Real Pack using the following steps:

  1. Move the Resource Pack to where you want it located on your computer (see our recommendation below). Caution: Once you install the resource pack at a particular location it will be more difficult to move it later.
  2. Open Excel, but don’t try to open the XRealStats.xlam or XRealStatsX.xlam file that you downloaded earlier.
  3. Select File > Help|Options > Add-Ins and click on the Go button at the bottom of the window (see Figure 1). Alternatively, you can simply press Alt-TI (i.e. hold the Alt key down and simultaneously press T followed by I) and the dialog box shown in Figure 2 will appear.

    Add-in dialog box
    Figure 1 – Add-Ins dialog box 1
  4. Check the Xrealstats or Xrealstatsx option on the dialog box that appears (see Figure 2) and click the OK button. NOTE: If you have previously activated a different version of the Real Statistics software you must uncheck the option corresponding to that version.
  5. If this option doesn’t appear, click on Browse to locate and then choose the xrealstats.xlam or xrealstatsx.xlam file. Then complete step 4 as described above.

Where to place the Real Statistics Resource Pack

While you can place the Real Statistics Resource Pack anywhere on your computer, we recommend that you put the file in the following folder:

C:\Users\user-name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AddIns

where user-name is your username in Microsoft Windows. Since some of these folders are hidden, you may find it convenient to enable showing hidden folders. For example, in Windows 10 or 11 you can do this by opening Settings and then typing Show Hidden Files and Folders in the search field. Next, check on the Show hidden files, folders, and drives option in the dialog box that appears, and then click on the OK button.

Installation of Upgrades

Once you have installed the Real Statistics Resource Pack as described above, to install a new version of the software you don’t need to repeat these steps. You only need to delete the previous version of the resource pack and put the new version of the software in the same location as the previous version.

Troubleshooting

If there is a problem during the installation try one or more of the following:

  1. If Excel is running, close it. Find the file with the Real Statistics add-in. Right-click on the file and click on the Properties option from the menu that appears. Towards the bottom of the General tab of the Properties window, you will see the security message “This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer”. Next to this message is the Unblock checkbox. Make sure this is checked and press the OK button. Start Excel.
  2. Click on Options from the File ribbon and then choose the Trust Center option on the left side. Next, click on Trust Center Settings …. Now, click on the Macro Settings option on the left side and make sure that it is Disable all Macros with Notification. Also, click on the Trusted Locations option on the left side and click on the Add New Location… button to add the folder that contains the XRealStats or XRealStatsX file as a trusted location.
  3. Try opening a blank Excel worksheet and press Alt-TI. Uncheck the Xrealstats add-in and close Excel. Now open a blank Excel worksheet and press Alt-TI. This time check the Xrealstats add-in

Most importantly, remember that Solver must be installed. To check this, press Alt-TI and make sure that Solver (as well as Xrealstats or Xrealstatsx) is on the list of add-ins with a checkmark next to it.

Real Statistics Functions

Once you have installed the Real Statistics Resource Pack you can use the Real Statistics functions in the same way as you use the built-in worksheet functions supplied with Excel. These functions are described throughout the rest of this website. A complete list of these functions can be found on the Tools menu of the website (or at Real Statistics Software Capabilities).

Real Statistics Data Analysis Tools

You can access the Real Statistics data analysis tools in one of the following ways, as described in Accessing Real Statistics Data Analysis Tools:

  • By pressing Ctrl-m or
  • Clicking on an icon on the Add-Ins ribbon or
  • Clicking on an icon on the Quick Access Toolbar or
  • Via the Macro dialog box

A dialog box will now appear that lists all the available Real Statistics data analysis tools.  You need to choose one of the data analysis tools from this list.

A dialog box will then appear as described in Real Statistics Data Analysis Tools which enables you to specify your input data and choose from available options. You can also access Help to get more information about the selected data analysis tool.

A complete list of Real Statistics data analysis tools can be found in Real Statistics Data Analysis Tools.

Uninstalling the Real Statistics Resource Pack

  1. Open Excel
  2. Press Alt-TI
  3. Uncheck the Xrealstats or Xrealstatsx option on the dialog box that appears and click the OK button.
  4. Close Excel and delete the file that contains the Real Statistics Resource Pack.

Thank you for developing such useful tools and making them available. I was happy to find your Excel extension package since I need to estimate some logistic regressions. However I am receiving the following error, when trying to install it:

Any suggestion on how to move forward will be appreciated.

Unless there are some standard Excel functions with these names in the French language they should work also in a French version of Excel.

  11. Hi Charles,

I’m curious if you’ve seen any issues that freeze excel upon trying to open the menu from the ribbon? My steps to repro are as follows:
    1. open excel and go to add-in tab on top navigation bar
    2. click on real-statistics-data analysis tools and observe the modal doesn’t pop up
    3. click on real-statistics-data analysis tools again and observe the modal does show up
    4. select any function from the modal and click “OK”
    5. see that excel has frozen. need to go to task manager to kill it

i am running windows7 os and excel 2013. i just noticed the problem with the old resource pack (RealStats.xlam) so i tried to switch to the newest and it doesn’t seem to have solved my problem. I’ve been using this for about 3 years now and have had no issues like this before so it’s pretty weird.

Any help or incite is greatly appreciated.

    • Hi Kevin,
I have not seen this problem before. The program size has been getting larger over time as I add more features. I wonder whether this has something to do with the problem. One way to check is to use the Mac version of the software. It should also work with Excel 2013 and Windows 7, but it has less code (since it lacks some of the help facilities). Also note that you don’t have to use Real Statistics from the ribbon and can access it using the key sequence Ctrl-m.

      • Thanks for the quick reply, Charles. Yeah the Ctrl-m gets the menu up on the first try, but then when I select a real stats function and click “ok” I get back into the state where I need to kill the excel process. It’s weird because it seems like excel freezes, but it doesn’t say anything about it become unresponsive. I honestly think it may be a bug in excel and not with real stats. I’m going to try a few things and I will keep you posted.

Also I tried putting the mac .xlam file there too and it didn’t work so I don’t think it’s an issue with the size of it.

  12. Hi I have just switched to a new machine and am having great difficulty installing real statistics.

The directory C:\Users\user-name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AddIns didn’t exist so I tried creating the subdirectory “AddIns”, downloaded your file to that location, added the new location in Trust Center but there was no sign of the new add-in.

I then discovered that Solver was located in the following directory.

    C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.Office.Desktop.Excel_[….]\Office 16\Library\SOLVER\SOLVER.XLAM

    Datapak has a very similar-lookinglocation.

Having gained access to the WindowsApps subdirectory (no mean feat for a non-expert), I tried to save the XLAM file in a similar location but I was denied permission to do this.

I would appreciate any help here! Thanks in advance.

The aim is to evaluate the effect of GA on germination under two photoperiod i.e. light/drak & complete darkness
We test the hypothesis that response of the species to GA is related to photoperiod conditions.

      • Research question is – Is there a difference in germination between GA treatment and without GA treatment in light and darkness.

        • Hello Bhagwati,
If I understand correctly, you have a fixed GA Treatment factor with two levels (GA and no GA) and Lighting with three levels (Light, Dark, Complete Darkness). I believe that for each of the 2 x 3 = 6 combinations you have 4 replications. The dependent variable is % of germination. Two test whether there are significant differences for each factor and the interactions, you can use Two Factor ANOVA with replication.
This is my understanding, but I also see that you may also have two other factors: Species (only A is listed) and Treatment (you only have pretreatment list). Please explain whether these are factors in your analysis. You don-t seem to include any analysis of these in the hypothesis that you want to test.

      • Yes, I downloaded file by Explorer and it finally worked, but when I tried to install it the same problem appeared. It’s like our excel doesn’t know .xlam file.

  31. Good evening,

I tried to download Real Statistics Resource Pack for Excel 2010/2013/2016/2019/365, because my version of Excel is 2013, but it says “No file”. What should I do now? Are there any other options?

    Thank you

  32. Dear Charles
I am a statistics beginner, and I find your Real Statistics website and the software pack you developed so useful; I had discovered the website last year and downloaded the Real Statistics Resource Pack in the Autumn of 2018. I have been using it without any problems.
Today, I am trying to download the latest release, version 6.1. However, I am getting the same message, ‘Failed – No file’, John Le Roux reported on 13 April 2019. Unlike John Le Roux’ version of Excel, my version of Excel is Excel 2016 (version 16), 32-bit. The Windows 10 Pro version is 1803. I tried the download your software both on my PC and my laptop. On both occasions, I get the message ‘Failed – No file’.
I do hope I will be able to resolve this issue: I love to keep on learning. (By the way, you say there will be a book available—I tried to search for it, but could not find it.) Thank you for the amazing resources, Pavla.

    • Hello Pavla,
I am pleased that you are getting value from the website and software.
I don’t know why you were unable to download the latest version of the software. I just tried to download it and had no problems. I suggest that you try again. If you are still having problems, please let me know.

        • Hello Ichraf,
Earlier today another user, Marc, sent a comment that he had trouble downloading the file using the Chrome browser, but was successful using Firefox.
I just downloaded the file without any problems using Chrome and also using Edge.
I suggest that you try downloading again, but let me know if you are still having this problem.

      • Dear Charles
Thank you very much for your response. When I contacted you initially, I did try several browsers (Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Edge), none of them worked. Today, however, I tried my preferred browser, Google Chrome, again, and, lo-and-behold, no problem. Maybe, I should have been more patient originally … Well, all is well, and thank you again for your concern, Pavla.

Glad to see that you were able to download the file. I don’t know why you had this problem. Usually this is a browser problem, but I don’t really know for sure.

    • Hello John,
I no longer have a separate version of the software for Excel 2010. You can use the main version since it now supports Excel 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 365 for Windows.

I downloaded version 6.1 and install it, following all your instructions. Installation run well, but when I type =Ver(), the response is 6.0.4…

I delete the previous version and install the new one and got the same message.

    Best regards

    • Dear Jorge,
I suggest that you press Ctrl-Shft-m.
If this doesn’t work, press Alt-TI, uncheck RealStats and click on the OK button. Now press Alt-TI again, check RealStats and click on the OK button.

I tried all tips that you suggested without success. Additionally, I uninstall the program and delete the xlam file from my computer and restart my pc. Then download the xlam again from your site, unblocked it, and configure the trust center as explained on this page and install it as usually. Installation runs fine but when I ask for =Ver(), appears 6.0.4 instead 6.1.

        Thanks for any tip

        • Dear Jorge,
This is my fault. I forgot to change the release number from 6.0.4 to 6.1. I create a new version yesterday. If you download it now, you should get release 6.1. I apologize for this silly error on my part.

  35. Hello,

I am using Microsoft Excel 2016 Professional Plus.
Whenever I try to install this add-ins. It says automation error.
I’ve followed the procedures of troubleshooting available on your site, but I couldn’t install it. It also says that the code may be incompatible.

By the way, I’ve downloaded the 2016 version of realstat for windows.

    Please help me.

    • Hello,
Lots of other people have installed the software using Excel 2016 without getting this error. I am not sure what is causing the error. Can you provide additional info as to when you are getting the error message?
Hopeful long you didn’t try to install the software by double clicking on it. This could result in various types of problems.

  36. Hello Charles!
Thank you for the great tool.

I don’t really know what happened after I changed computers, but the add-in doesn’t work on my new laptop. I have installed and uninstalled it several times following the trobleshooting section, but it always says the addin cannot be installed and closes the excel file.
Can you help me solve it?

    • Hello Flavia,
Without more info it is hard for me to resolve the problem, but I have one approach that might work. Download the Excel file containing the RealStats.xlam file. Now rename the file to say RealStats2.xlam (the actual name used doesn’t really matter) and then install as described on the website, namely press Alt-TI (if using Windows) and then click on the Browse button to find the file you just renamed. Make sure that both RealStats and Solver are both on the list of add-ins with a check mark next to them. Once this is done press Ctrl-m
Note that this renaming is only necessary if you already have a version of Real Statistics installed and Excel is confused as to where to find the file that contains the software.
Whatever else you do, don’t double click on the file that contains the Real Statistics software.

  37. Hey,

I installed the real stats add-in but after restarting my computer fisher’s exact test doesn’t seem to be working. Thoughts? Is there a troubleshooting page?

    Thanks!

    • Hi Brendan,
There is a Troubleshooting section on this webpage. What is causing the problem really depends on what you mean by “…doesn’t seem to be working”. What sort of error messages are you seeing?
