Real Statistics Resource Pack for Macintosh

The Real Statistics Resource Pack contains a variety of supplemental functions and data analysis tools not provided by Excel. These complement the standard Excel capabilities and make it easier for you to perform the statistical analyses described in the rest of this website.

On this webpage, we describe how to download and install the Real Statistics Resource Pack for the Mac.

Download

If you accept the License Agreement, click on one of the following options to download the appropriate version of the Real Statistics resource pack for Excel on the Mac:

Downloading this resource pack means that you accept the License Agreement.

Installation

Once you have downloaded the Resource Pack, you need to install it using the following steps.

  1. Move the Resource Pack to where you want it located on your computer. Caution: Once you install the resource pack at a particular location it will be more difficult to move it later.
  2. Open Excel, but don’t try to open the xrealstats-mac.xlam or realstats-mac-2011.xlam file that you downloaded earlier.
  3. From the Tools menu choose Add-Ins.
  4. Make sure that the Solver option is checked on the dialog box that appears.
  5. Check the XRealstats-Mac (or Realstats-Mac-2011) option on the dialog box that appears and click the OK button.
  6. If the XRealstats-Mac (or Realstats-Mac-2011) option doesn’t appear, click on Browse to find and choose the XRealStats-Mac.xlam (or RealStats-Mac-2011.xlam) file that you downloaded earlier. Then complete step 5 as described above.

Real Statistics Functions

Once you have installed the Real Statistics Resource Pack you can use the supplemental functions in the same way as you use the built-in worksheet functions supplied with Excel. These functions are described throughout the rest of this website. A complete list of these functions can be found in the Tools menu of the website.

Real Statistics Data Analysis Tools

To use the data analysis tools enter Control-m (i.e. control key + m) or click on the Real Statistics menu.

The descriptions of how to use the Real Statistics functions and data analysis tools apply to the Mac version of the software, although sometimes with minor modifications especially as described in Mac User Interface.

Uninstalling the Real Statistics Resource Pack

  1. Open Excel, but don’t try to open the XRealStats-Mac.xlam or RealStats-Mac-2011.xlam file that you downloaded earlier.
  2. From the Tools menu choose Add-Ins.
  3. Uncheck the XRealStats-Mac or RealStats-Mac-2011 option on the dialog box that appears and click the OK button.
  4. Close Excel and delete the file that contains the Real Statistics Resource Pack.

  1. Hello Charles,

I have attempted to install this software several times and I tested it using the =VER() formula but it is not working. I have no idea where I went wrong… I followed each step exactly. I’d appreciate your help! Thanks!

When you choose the Add-Ins option from the Tools menu, do you see RealStats-2011 or RealStats-Mac in the list of addins with a check mark next to it ? Do you see Solver on the list of addins with a check mark next to it?

How does Real-Stats differ from regular Excel? Is there additional functions added from Real-Stats? How will I know when I am using Real-Stats versus Excel?

          • Jackie,
Real Statistics adds functions to Excel as well as data analysis tools.
The data analysis tools are accessed via the Addins ribbon or by pressing Ctrl-m, while the Excel data analysis tools are accessed from the Data ribbon.
Real Statistics functions are a type of Excel function (called user-defined functions).
When you enter an Excel function you are given additional information about its arguments that are not available from Real Statistics functions. E.g. when you type in Excel’s COUNT function, you will be prompted by =COUNT(value1, [value2], …), while when you type in the Real Statistics function =COUNTU you won’t see this type of information about the arguments. You need to press Ctrl-A to get similar information, i.e. =COUNTU(array1). Otherwise, there really isn’t much difference between Excel and Real Statistics functions.

Which version of the Real Statistics software are you using? (1) version (Rel 5.0) for Excel 2016, (2) new version (Rel 5.0) for Excel 2011, (3) old version (Rel 3.5.3) for Excel 2011. Have you installed Solver?

The Rel 3.5.3 version has been tested and has been used by many users. You need to follow the installation instructions on the webpage from which you downloaded the software.
Probably the Rel 5.0 version also works, but it has not been tested.

That seems to be the key to accessing the Cluster analysis tool. I don’t see any other path that will lead to cluster analysis. I’m using Windows 10 and Excel 2016 (part of Office 365 – most current release). Any thoughts on why some menu options may not be available?

If you are using the latest release of the Real Statistics software (Rel 5.0), then after pressing Ctrl-m, you will be presented with the original interface of the newer multipage interface. In the original interface, Multivariate Analysis is the 12th option on the list. In the multipage interface, you need to click on the MultiVar page.

Sorry, but I don’t really understand what you did. It is important that you don’t try to open the file that you downloaded from the Real Statistics website. Instead you must install the software and then use it on a new Excel file. See website for details.

It is taking me some time to do this since I need to rewrite some of the code since it doesn’t work on the Mac in its present form (esp. selecting ranges in a spreadsheet). To uninstalls Real Statistics:

        1. Delete the file that contains Real Statistics
        2. Open Excel and go to the Tools menu and select Addins.
        3. Uncheck RealStats (probably called RealStats-2011 or RealStats-Mac). You will be prompted to remove the reference to Real Statistics. Respond OK.

To reinstall it (presumably with a different copy of the Real Statistics file):

        1. Download the Real Statistics file from the website
        2. Open Excel and go to the Tools menu and select Addins.
        3. Find the file that contains Real Statistics and check RealStats (probably called RealStats-2011 or RealStats-Mac) entry in the dialog box. Press OK.

  10. Hi –

    I really like using RealStatistics – it’s a lifesaver, but I’ve hit a snag and I hope there’s a quick fix.

I’m working with data that has both negative and positive values (means range from around -0.5 to +1.8); when I do a box plot, the output is adjusted so that all of the values are positive (including the whiskers – the scale on the output chart is 0-10). Is it possible to cancel this adjustment? I really need the actual values represented.

It seems like it should be a relatively simple thing to correct, but I’m not sure how to go about doing it. Any help would be enormously appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Evan

    • Evan,
Unfortunately, it is not an easy thing to fix. I made the adjustment to keep everything positive because there seems to be no other way to program the boxplots using Excel’s VBA programming language.
You can create the boxplots manually without running into this problem as described on the following webpage:

I’ve downloaded what I believe to be the correct version of Real Stats for Excel 2016 on a Mac (the file is called RealStats-2011.xlam, and I got it by clicking the download link above, “Real Statistics Resource Pack for Mac”). When I open the Add-ins window from the Tools menu RealStats is not on the list of available Add-ins, so I click Browse and select the file that way. It is surprising to me that pressing the m key while holding the Command key down doesn’t work.
It is possible that the Command button is not working properly. See the following webpage regarding this:
          https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3067628?start=0&tstart=0

In any case, you can access the Real Statistics data analysis tools by selecting Macros from the Tools menu and entering InitStats on the dialog box that appears and clicking the Run button. Not the best, but it should work. You can, of course, access any of the Real Statistics worksheet functions in the usual way.

I am not sure which problem you are referring to. If you are getting a message like “Can’t find project or library”, then I need to ask a few questions so that I can figure out what the problem is. Usually the problem is that you haven’t installed the software properly (as described on the referenced webpage).

          • Marco,

If you are being asked for a password then you have not installed the software correctly. You don’t need to have a password. In order to use the software on a Mac running Excel 2011 or Excel 2016 you must follow the following steps:

            1. Open Excel, but don’t try to open the realstats-2011.xlam file that you downloaded earlier.
            2. From the Tools menu choose Add-Ins.
            3. Check the Realstats option on the dialog box that appears and click the OK button.
            4. If this option doesn’t appear, click on Browse to find and choose the realstats 2011.xlam file that you downloaded earlier. Then complete step 3 as described above.

Hundreds of people (probably thousands) are using the Mac version of the software without problems.

            Charles

          • Marco,
I am very pleased that you got it to work.
The approach used to select ranges in Windows dialog boxes doesn’t work on the Mac. I therefore implemented a different approach, which unfortunately also didn’t work.
The big problem I have is that I don’t own a Mac and so I can only work on these issues when I am able to borrow a Mac from someone. I see that you are writing in Italian and so perhaps you can help me here since I live in northern Italy about one hour from Milan, and perhaps you know some way for me to get access to a Mac.

      2. Uncheck the Realstats option on the dialog box that appears and click the OK button.

  28. FYI: On this page you say, “Move the Resource Pack to where you want it located on your computer (see our recommendation below).” But there is no recommendation below, or on any other page I could find (for Mac). Similarly, other mentions of the recommended location say only “see recommendation on this website”. Replacing some of these sentences with an actual recommended location would be helpful.

I saved the Resource Pack to Applications — Microsoft Office 2011 — Office — Add-Ins, and it seems to have worked, (it appears as an option on the Excel toolbar) but I haven’t yet tried to use the tools.

    • Owen,

Since I don’t have a recommendation for where to place the Real Statistics add-in on a Mac, I have removed that reference.

You said there are other mentions of a recommended location (“see recommendation on this website”). Where did you find these, so that I can make this clearer.

Thanks for bringing this issue up.

  29. Hi, I tried to get the eigen values and vector using the add ins, but it didn’t work. The only thing that appeared was #VALUE!. Can you please tell me what went wrong? Thanks

    • This will happen if the matrix is not invertible (i.e. if the determinant is 0). If you like you can send me an Excel spreadsheet with the matrix that you are trying to find the eigenvalues/vectors for and I will try to figure out what has gone wrong.

    • Hi Dee,

The key steps for installing the Windows version of the software are:

      1. Open Excel, but don’t try to open the realstats.xlam file that you downloaded earlier.
      2. Press Alt-TI (i.e. hold the Alt key down and simultaneously press T followed by I)
      3. In the dialog box that appears check the Realstats option (or Realstats 2011, Realstats 2007, etc., depending on the version of Excel that you are using) and then click the OK button.
      4. If Realstats doesn’t appear in the list, click on the Browse button to locate the Real Statistics file that you downloaded. Then complete step 3 as described above.

Thanks for telling me this. I will try to fix it in the next release.
Is everything else working in the Mac version of the software? As I have mentioned elsewhere I don’t own a Mac and so have limited time to test the software on a friend’s Mac.

I hope to have a new Mac release of the Real Statistics software available this week. Although the dialog boxes will still be small I have tried to improve the readability. If you would like to test the release I can put it online later today as a beta version.

Thank you very much for volunteering to help with the beta testing of the latest Mac version of the Real Statistics software.

I have just made Release 3.5.3 beta for the Mac available for download at Real Statistics Resource Pack for Mac Download

I have just tested it, but not as extensively as I would have liked since I only had access to a Mac computer for a few hours. I would appreciate your checking to see whether it can be used on a different Mac besides mine. Mostly I want to make sure that the Mac doesn’t crash or get hung up when any of the Real Statistics functions are used and especially when the various data analysis tools are used.

The mathematical part of the software is identical to the Windows version, but some of the interface has been rewritten for the Mac. Some features are not working. In particular, ranges must be inserted manually in Input Range fields (you can’t highlight the range) and I am not sure whether the Fill buttons work.

I appreciate any help you can give in identifying problems with the interface for the Mac.

  30. For Mac users, I have had success copying the RealStats-2011.xlam file to the following location:
    Applications–>Microsoft Office 2011–>Office–>Add-Ins

Then, open Excel, click on Tools–>Addins. RealStats will appear on the list. Check the box, then click the Select button.

  31. Hi,

I installed the Real Statistics resource pack on my Mac, under Excel 2011, without any problems. But, when I go to Data Analysis Tools under the Real Statistics menu, the Real Statistics pop-up box is quite small, and the text is difficult to decipher. Is there an option available to expand the size of the pop-up box? [There’s no handle on the box to enlarge it.]

    Thanks!

    • Jim,
On the Mac that I used the pop-up box was smaller than the pop-up box on the Windows version of Excel, but I didn’t have any trouble reading it. In any case, I will look into making the size of this dialog box adjustable in a future release.

  32. Happy to say it installed correctly on my Mac running Excel 2011. Under add-ins I chose “select” (“Browse” being unavailable) which brought up the directory menu, and I was able to select it from where I’d moved it. I immediately did a PCA analysis on a covariance matrix I had recently constructed from equity price histories: it performed flawlessly. Thank you for all the hard work that went into creating this add-in.

I have Excel 2008 for MAC. Which version of your RealStats should I use? I tried all three packages as per your instructions using add-ins and it won’t let me do it because of the macros issue.

  34. This looks like it could be really nice, but I’m getting various errors (running Excel 2011 on Mac). First, when I select the RealStats from the Add-Ins options, I get the error:
    “Can’t find project or library”
When I click OK, I’m prompted for a “RealStats Password”
When hit Cancel and choose Data Analysis Tools from the RealStatistics menu, the menu comes up, but when I choose any function, a window comes up and I get beeps every time I click anywhere in Excel. I’m left with no choice but to force quit Excel.
Is there a passwd that I should be entering?
    Thanks

    • You do not need to provide a password to use the software. The usual reason for getting this message is that the installation process has not been completed (as described on the referenced webpage). You said that you selected RealStats from the Add-in options. For the Mac I think this should be something like RealStat 2011 instead. You probably need to use the Browse button to find the correct file.

If you have followed the Installation instructions then I suggest that you download an earlier version of the software. This can be obtained from the referenced webpage. Try using Release 3.1 (instead of Release 3.1.2). You will need to follow the Installation instructions. This time you will need to use something like RealStats 2011 1 Oct 2011 from the Add-in options.

You don’t need a password. You will receive this message if you try to open the file. You don’t need to do this.
Just follow the instruction on the referenced webpage, namely

1.Open Excel, but don’t try to open the realstats-2011.xlam file that you downloaded earlier.

          • Hi, I am experiencing the exact symptom. I downloaded the package and it is called RealStats.xlam in the download. I open excel and choose it as an add-in (not opening the file) and I get the exact same errors and prompts for a password. Was this issue ever resolved?

          • Barbara,
Please confirm that when you select Add-Ins on the Tools menu that you see the Realstats 2011 option on the dialog box that appears with a check mark next to it.
            Charles

  35. I have installed realstats-2011.xlsm per the instructions and the solver stuff works using the ctrl-m. However, I can’t access and any real statistics custom functions. They are all coming up #name.

I have enable macros on the spreadsheets to no avail.

    • Frank,

It sounds like you have installed the software on your mac, but you still need to have Excel recognize the software. You do this by accessing the Tools menu and selecting the Add-ins choice. Next click on the Browse button in the dialog box that appears and choose the realstats 2011.xlam file that you downloaded. Press the Close button. Finally check the Realstats option on the dialog box. This is described on the referenced webpage.

If you have done all this already what happens when you enter the formula =VER() in any cell?

  36. Charles-

This add-in set is really nice. But I am seeing a bug in the t-test routine. It’s generating error 424 (“object required”) on startup, before showing the input window. Everything else starts fine. I’m running Excel 2011 (14.4.4) on the current Yosemite release candidate. If more information would be helpful, let me know.

    • Alistair,

Unfortunately I currently don’t have access to a Mac to fix the problem that you have raised. Instead I am providing access to the previous two versions of the Real Statistics Resource Pack for Mac (Release 3.1 and Release 2.10).

Release 3.1 was created only one week before the latest release (on Oct 1). The main differences are that there is an error in the p-value for the KAPPA function (one-tail value instead of two-tail value) and the dialog boxes for the data analysis tools are not so nicely formatted. Please let me know whether this version works properly.

I have also provided an older version of the software from February 2014 in case the Oct 1 version doesn’t work correctly.

You can download either of these versions from https://real-statistics.com/free-download/real-statistics-resource-pack/real-statistics-resource-pack-macintosh/

  37. Hi Charles,
I just downloaded the RealStats-2011.xlam for use with Excel 2011 on my Mac. I followed your instructions you sent to “Mark” on July 2.
I am wondering, should I have moved the .xlam file somewhere else other than the “Downloads” file before starting Excel ? Seems to work OK, but must I leave the file in the Downloads file ?
    >>Also, my eyes aren’t what they used to be…how do I enlarge the RealStats dialog box size ? I assume the fonts will scale-up too ?

    Thanks.

    • Hi Wayne,

If you want to move the file you probably need to uncheck the the file from the list of Excel add-ins (Tools > Add-Ins dialog box) and then move the file to a new location and repeat the installation process by selecting Tools > Add-Ins and then clicking on Browse to locate the Real Statistics Resource Pack file. I have not tried this and so don’t know if it works.

If this doesn’t work then the following approach should work. Make a copy of the Real Statistics Resource Pack file and give it a new name. Move it to where you want to put it and then repeat the installation process.

Unfortunately you can’t enlarge the RealStats dialog box (at least I don’t know of any way to do this). I will add this to the list of potential enhancements for a future release.

  38. Hi Charles

Maybe you can confirm if this should be working for me or have I overlooked something?

I downloaded the file, ran it. I was prompted to 1/ enable macros 2/ don’t install 3/ run and disable macros.

Choosing 1 Excel appeared to accept it. Going into Add Ins within Excel Real stats did not appear.

I restarted the machine and tried it a couple times. Each result the same

I am using Mac 2011, and installed the xlam file in my Excel App folder.

    Thanks

    • Hi Mark,

You shouldn’t try to run the Real Statistics Resource Pack. Instead you need to install it (i.e. instruct Excel that the file contains an add-in). For the Mac environment follow the following steps:

      0. Open Excel (but not by clicking on the file containing the Real Statistics Resource Pack)
      1. From the Tools menu choose Add-Ins.
      2. On the dialog box that appears click on Browse to locate and choose the realstats 2011.xlam file that you downloaded earlier
      3. Check the Realstats option on the dialog box that appears and click the OK button.

You only need to install the Real Statistics Resource Pack one time. After that any time you open Excel you will automatically have access to the resource pack.

Are you sure that you have chosen Add/Ins from the Tools menu?
If you don’t see the Browse button then either you have brought up the wrong pop-up window or there is a problem with Excel.

  39. Thank you, Charles, for developing this! FYI, I tried it on my Mac using Office 2004, and it didn’t recognize it as a valid add-in. No problem for me; I’ll just use my newer Windows machine. But I thought you might like to know that version’s definitely too old (and I doubt worth troubling about for you).

    • Hi Seth,
The current version of Real Statistics for the Mac has only been tested with Excel 2011. There are still some people using the Real Statistics software with a pre-2007 version of Excel, but, as you have pointed out, I don’t think the audience is big enough to support earlier versions of the Mac. I am pleased that you were able to use the software on a newer Window computer.
