Real Statistics Resource Pack for Macintosh

The Real Statistics Resource Pack contains a variety of supplemental functions and data analysis tools not provided by Excel. These complement the standard Excel capabilities and make it easier for you to perform the statistical analyses described in the rest of this website.

On this webpage, we describe how to download and install the Real Statistics Resource Pack for the Mac.

Download

If you accept theย License Agreement, click on one of the following optionsย to download the appropriateย version of the Real Statistics resource pack for Excel on the Mac:

Downloading this resource pack means that you accept the License Agreement.

Installation

Once you have downloaded the Resource Pack, you need to install it using the following steps.

  1. Move the Resource Pack to where you want it located on your computer. Caution: Once you install the resource pack at a particular location it will be more difficult to move it later.
  2. Open Excel, but don’t try to open the xrealstats-mac.xlam or realstats-mac-2011.xlam file that you downloaded earlier.
  3. From theย Toolsย menu chooseย Add-Ins.
  4. Make sure that the Solver option is checked on the dialog box that appears.
  5. Check the XRealstats-Mac (or Realstats-Mac-2011) option on the dialog box that appears and click the OKย button.
  6. If the XRealstats-Mac (or Realstats-Mac-2011) option doesnโ€™t appear, click on Browse to find and choose the XRealStats-Mac.xlam (or RealStats-Mac-2011.xlam) file that you downloaded earlier. Then complete step 5 as described above.

Real Statistics Functions

Once you have installed the Real Statistics Resource Pack you can use the supplemental functions in the same way as you use the built-in worksheet functions supplied with Excel. These functions are described throughout the rest of this website. A complete list of these functions can be found in the Tools menu of the website.

Real Statistics Data Analysis Tools

To use the data analysis tools enter Control-m (i.e. control key + m) or click on the Real Statistics menu.ย

The descriptions of how to use the Real Statistics functions and data analysis tools apply to the Mac version of the software, although sometimes with minor modifications especially as described in Mac User Interface.

Uninstalling the Real Statistics Resource Pack

  1. Open Excel, but don’t try to open the XRealStats-Mac.xlam or RealStats-Mac-2011.xlam file that you downloaded earlier.
  2. From theย Toolsย menu chooseย Add-Ins.
  3. Uncheck theย XRealStats-Mac or RealStats-Mac-2011ย option on the dialog box that appears and click theย OKย button.
  4. Close Excel and delete the file that contains the Real Statistics Resource Pack.

I really can think of any reason why you would be getting this error. What language is Excel using? Have you installed all the available updates to Excel 2011?

  2. Hi,

I am having issues using this. Originally, I selected the Real Stats Add-in in excel from my downloads folder (using Mac 2016/2019/365 Mac). I checked the box to add it. The Add-in ribbon appeared but it was empty. So I deleted and tried again. Now I have moved it to a different location on my hard drive. However, when trying to open an Excel file that was sent to me with Real Stats regression used, the formulas all have #NAME?errors.

The formulas reference /Users/kylehud/Downloads/XRealStats.xlam’, which is where I originally installed the add-in. I have since re-tried and left Real Stats in the downloads location. But I still can’t see the regression output that was sent to me. Is there any remedy for this issue? Thanks!

    • Hi Kyle,
Regarding the issue that you describe in the first two sentences of your comment, you just need to press the key sequence Ctrl-m. This will open the main menu.
Regarding the rest of your comment, it seems like the actions you have taken have deleted or disabled the Real Statistics software. There is probably some simple way to fix this, but without seeing your Mac, I can’t say how to do this. Instead, I suggest that you delete the file containing the software and uncheck RealStats from the list of add-ins and then download and install the software from scratch.

  3. Hi Charles,

I have been running the cluster analysis very successfully but for some reason the calculation seems to continue iterating after the initial results are displayed. How do I stop this and freeze the results? I do copy the cells as values but is like a moving target.

I have followed the instructions on the installation of the realstats resource pack for mac. I downloaded the latest version for office 365 but whenever I press control-m nothing happens for me. I tried the 2011 version but that had no response as well.

    Thanks for your reply.

I already went through this test. However, my question is what if I want to control other variables that might impact the indirect relationship in order to find the mediation effect.

For example, I want to find the impact of CSR on firm performance with corporate governance as the mediator. However, I should control for other variables such as the firm size, age, leverage.

Is there a way to include these variable in the mediation analysis you have in your software add-ins

Even after downloading the package and adding it to the Add Ins, every time I open a new file, I do not find the Add Ins on the above tool bar.

I have to repeatedly deselect it in the Options/Add Ins and again select it every time I close and reopen an excel file.

Can you let me know a fix to this?

I downloaded a new cope of RealStatistics and called it “RealStats-Mac-2016_X.xlam” in the folder “user/walter/Library/GroupContainers/xxx.Office/Usercontent/Add-Ins”

I did the install as you explain on this page, not double clicking on the .xlam file.

Also checked your page for this error in specific (The data that I am trying to do the logistic regression on is your example on the page “https://real-statistics.com/logistic-regression/basic-concepts-logistic-regression/”

          • Hi Charles

Thanks for the new version (6.2 for mac). The issue with the logistic regression seems to be resolved.

There is a new problem though – it looks like you hard-coded the location of the file to be “/Applications/Microsoft Excel.app/RealStats-Mac-2016.xlam” because every time I open Excel now, it complains that it cannot find the above file (which is a different location to where I installed it from). Even though the add-in is appearing the add-ins list and is ticked, I then need to replace it with the one that I saved.

I tried to save the xlam in the above location, but the mac has restricted permissions for that folder.

          • Hello Walter,
The location is not hardcoded. In fact, the location should be wherever you put the file, except that once you put the file some place, you shouldn’t move it.
I suggest that you rename the new file and reinstall it. Excel gets confused about these sorts of things.

  17. Hi Charles,

Thank you for the resource pack, I am looking forward to using it. I am however stuck with the installation. I have downloaded the file for Mac 2016/2019/365, followed the installation guide (placed the file in its final home, browsed for it, Solver check box ticked, everything) and it came up with the following error:
“Excel cannot open the file ‘RealStats-Mac-2016.xlam’ because the file format or the file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.”
Clicking OK then I get this:
Microsoft Excel cannot access the file ‘[full path]/RealStats-Mac-2016.xlam’. There are several possible reasons: The file name or path does not exist (checked, verified, they both do and are correct), The file is being used by another program (checked, verified, file was not being used by anything else, only ever touched the file to place it from Downloads into its current folder), The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook (checked, verified, it was a new, blank workbook and unique in total, only just created it before installing the add-on).
Not sure where to look for answers. Do you have any ideas?
    Many thankZ

  18. For all the people who have come across the โ€œCompile error in hidden module: ‘xx’. This error commonly occurs when code is incompatible with the version, platform, or architecture of this applicationโ€, I was able to solve it by uninstalling and reinstalling the package and making very sure NOT to click the downloaded software before enabling it from the add-ins menu (as Charles’ directions rightly point out). I had clicked on it out of habit before following the rest of the directions, and while everything else seemed to work fine (Solver was checked and =VER() worked), I ran into that error as soon as I tried to run a logistic regression. I wouldn’t have expected that clicking on the download would have that effect, so perhaps that may explain other people’s errors too.

    • Vishnu,
For some reason Microsoft does not support this capability in their implementation of Excel for Mac. This is why I use the little + icon next to the input range text box on the dialog box. If you click on this icon, you will be able to insert the range in the usual way. As far as the output range is concerned, you only need to specify this (by select the cell where the output will begin) before you select a data analysis tool; this approach is used in both the Windows and Mac versions of the Real Statistics software.

I have a Mac with 2011 Excel loaded on it. I have downloaded the 2011 .xlam program and moved it to my application folder. When I select the Tool option for add-ins, I see solver, but not the XLAM file. I can load the XLAM folder into the add-in options with the select button, but I get the “Can’t Find Project or Library ” error message. If I push “OK,” then it asks for a password. If if I just push cancel, then the file seems to be in the Tools Addin options with a check beside it and there is a “Real Statistics” column at the end of the menu header line. I can try Ctrl-M as well and get the menu. When I try to use the menu, however, I get “compilation errors in hidden modules”. In order to exit out of these, I usually just force quit the program.

Any ideas about what I may be doing wrong. I can see that others have had similar problems, but I can’t seem to resolve this on my own.

If you don’t see RealStats-2011 on the list of addins when you select AddIns from the Tools menu, you need to click on the Browse button to locate the Real Statistics file. It must be checked in the list of addins or it won’t work.
You never need to use a password. If you are prompted for one then something has gone wrong.
If you move the file containing the Real Statistics software, then Excel may get confused. In this case you may need to start the installation process over again.

I now use Excel 2016 version and downloaded RealStats-Mac-2016.xlam. when I enter =VER() into a cell I receive ‘5.9 Excel Mac 2016/2019’. When I type cmd + m the window minimises, as designated by Excel short cuts. No menu for Real Statistics appears in the ribbon along with Solver and Data Analysis. So, at present, I cannot access the programme to used it. Any advice will be greatly received. Julian.

I have just installed Real Stats 5.6 for Excel 2011 (checked via the =ver() equation) on my Mac, which also is an Office 2011. I do see real stats and solver checkmarked when I go to Tools > Addins. After checkmarking realstats, I receive “can’t find project or library” which prompts me to the password screen. If I click “ok” I can still use the realstats dialog box as normal, however doing any tests (I’m trying to run a Mann-Whitney non-parametric test right now) leads me to the “compile error in hidden module: analysis” issue when I click ok. I’m just wondering what I am doing wrong, and if you had any ideas on how to solve this.

Since =VER() returns a value, this means that Real Statistics is installed, and so I can’t understand why it would ask for a password.
I suggest that you uninstall Real Statistics and then reinstall the software.

What do you see when you enter the formula =VER() in any cell?
Does Solver appear on the list of addins when you choose AddIns from the Tools menu? Is Solver checked?

          • Hi Charles,

I am experiencing the same issue. When I enter =VER(), it shows 5.6 Excel 2016 Mac. The Solver add-in is also checked. Unfortunately, when I try to run one factor ANOVA and Games-Howell test, it gives me the โ€œCompile error in hidden module: frmMenuโ€.

            Please advise. Thank you

          • I’ll chime in here too. I installed Real Statistics for Mac Excel 2011 and am getting the password prompt. When bypassing the password and attempting a Fleiss’ Kappa, I’m getting the “compile error in hidden module” error message. =VER() produces 5.6 Excel 2011.

          • Ken,
When you select the Addins option from the Tool menu, do you see Solver on the list of addins with a check mark next to it_

  32. Hi Charles,
I’ve downloaded the RealStats-MAC-2011 version available and when I try to run a Poisson Regression a error is shown, it says: “Compile error in hidden module: frmMenu”.
What should I do ? Could you help me out with that ?

    Thanks,

    • Henrique,
The usual reason for this is that Excel’s Solver has not been activated. When you choose AddIns from the Tools menu, you should see RealStats-2011 and Solver on the list of addins with check marks next to them.

  33. I love this add-in. I use it to teach statistic to undergrad students. It worked for a while but then it suddenly stopped. It only shows the downwards arrow but nothing appears when you click on it. I tried to uninstall and re-install. I tried copying and pasting in another folder as well. It just doesn’t work anymore. Could it be an update on MS office? Any suggestions on how I can solve this?
    Thanks!

Quite a few people have reported the same problem, but I don’t yet have an elegant solution.
What seems to works for some people is the following procedure:
      1. Select AddIns from the Tools menu and then UNCHECK the Realstats Add-In and SAVE.
      2. Select AddIns from the Tools menu and then RECHECK Realstats
Because this can be a bit awkward, I simply recommend that people use Control + m, which seems to work for almost everyone.

  34. First off, fantastic software!!! Very helpful!

I am having the same issue that several users are reporting: “Compile error in hidden module: xxx” mine being for “AnovaAnalysis” but it can be for others too, depending on what I’m trying to run. The only work-around I found was to disable the Add-In, Close Excel (I did NOT Quit Excel, just closed my Workbooks), Re-open Workbook and enable the Add-In and then it works just fine. But if I close the workbook or quit Excel it will not work. So each time I have to disable the Add-In, then re-open the sheet, re-enable the Add-In, then it works. It’s tedious, but it works. On my other Mac it works no problem. It’s so tedious that I tried installing the 2011 version which works flawlessly (I don’t both Add-Ins at the same time.) I’m running Excel 15.17 (2016 for Mac) and RealStats-Mac-2016. I hope this helps people that are having similar issues.

Binary logistic regression should work for a Mac. If you send me an Excel file with your data ans the output, I will try to figure out what happened.

The usual reason for this error is that the installation process was not completed properly (see Installation instructions). When you select the AddIns option from the Tools menu, do you see Realstats and Solver on the list of addins with a check mark next to each of them? What do you see when you enter the formula =VER() in any spreadsheet cell?

Thanks for sharing your work. I have two questions:
First excel is asking me a password for Realstats that I don’t have or I was not able to find it in your website.
Second, how do I cite your work in scientific publications?
Thanks in advance for your answers

  37. Hi – I’ve tried to download this tool several times on my mac and pc. For some reason the tool icon is not visible or accessible. Although under tools – add ins it’s checked along with the Solver Add-In, and Analysis ToolPak, the icon is not available/visible for me to use.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. This is urgent as I need to be able to use this for my Analytics course final exam.

    Thank you.

I don’t know what icon you are referring to. There is no icon. Once you install Real Statistics you use its worksheet functions just like any other Excel function. You can access the Real Statistics data analysis tools by pressing Ctrl-m.

  38. Dear Charles

I installed the following version:5.4.2 Mac Excel 2011 according to your instructions. I have excel 2011 for mac. Yesterday, I could get the version working just fine with the anova test on my data. However, this morning when I tried to open the workbook I kept getting all types of compatibility errors (Compile error in hidden module: ANOVA) and now I cannot work with the tool. I noticed others have had similar issues with the tool using mac 2011. Is there a way to fix this and get the tool running again?

I have no idea why the program would work fine one day and a day later the same program would generate errors.
Is there anything that changed from day 1 to day 2?

  40. Hello,

I’ve been using this software for a class and have had no problems until recently. I had to turn on the add-on again and now whenever I attempt to run any tests I get an error message that reads, “Compile error in hidden module: Analysis”

Any ideas as to why this is happening and how to fix it?

    Thanks!

I don’t know why this is happening, but let me ask you a couple of questions to try to identify what is causing this.
Which version of the Mac software are you using: Excel 2011 or Excel 2016? What do you see when you enter the following formula? =VER()

  41. Good Afternoon,

I am quite excited to run a logistic but am unable to access the software. I am using a 2016 Mac version and after spending countless hours downloading and installing, I have given up. I had the Solver running/checked, downloaded the compatible version, and just do not see it as an “Add In” anywhere. I expected a tab to pop-up and tried to find it under the standard data analysis pack.

    Please help if you can.

    Best, Derek

fyi, “Can’t find projects or libraries ” is the error message.

    • Derek,
When you select AddIns from the Tools menu do you see Solver and RealStats Mac 2016 on the list of addins? If so, then make sure there is a check mark next to both of these and press OK. If RealStats Mac 2016 is not on the list of addins, then click on the Browse button to locate the file containing RealStats Mac 2016. After completing this process make sure that Solver and RealStats Mac 2016 are on the list of addins with check marks next to them.
You can now use the software by pressing Ctrl-m.
You will know that things are working properly when a dialog box appears after pressing Ctrl-m.
If this doesn’t work, please tell at which step in the process you get an error message.

  42. Dear Charles,

I have downloaded and followed the steps exactly as listed but excel will not let me use your real statistics resource pack. I have tried to uninstall it too, by unchecking the box closing excel and deleting the files, but then when I open excel and go to tools>add-ins the real stat packs are still listed there, just unchecked. I am not sure if that is a problem or not.

Anyways, I then try to reinstall them and follow the instructions word for word. I have the realstats pack selected, the data analysis selected and the excel solver selected as add ins under the tool tab, but only the latter two show up in the upper corner of excel to be used.

Sorry, I scrolled through all these comments and I realize this is a sort of repeat question, but I am hoping to get some specific advice. let me know if I can provide you with any more information. Also, thanks for making this, I’m sure once I get it going it is going to be fantastic.

    • Max,
      1. You say that Excel won’t let you use the Real Statistics Resource Pack. How is this communicated to you? If it is an error message, what does the message say?
      2. When you install Real Statistics, are you able to press the key sequence Ctrl-m ? If so what do you see? What do you see when you enter the formula =VER() ? What version of Real Statistics are you using? The one for Excel 2011 or Excel 2016?
      3. When you unintall Real Statistics, you say that the real stat packs are still listed among the addins. You use the plural word packs; are you trying to install more than one version? If so, what happens when you install only one of the versions?
      4. When you uninstall any Excel addin by removing the check mark, it doesn’t go away from the list of addins (since you may want to reactivate it later by replacing the check mark). If you then delete the file containing the addin, when you try to check the corresponding addin you will receive an error message prompting you as to whether you want to delete the addin from the list. If you say yes, then the addin will be removed from the list of addins.

  43. Dear Charles,
i followed all the instructions and also all the comments you gave to the other..
however I’m having problems in using the add-in.
I created a folder into the office folder in my mac.
Then I installed the add-in as described.
I was trying using it with the same example you posted in the page.
And then I realised I have some problem.. (still don’t know if i’m just not able in using it or if it’s not properly installed).
When I open a blank Excel spreadsheet and then I select Addins from the Tools ribbon, RealStats 2011 does appear on the list with a check mark next to it
If i enter =VER() the outcome is: 5.0 Mac 2016
If i’m working on an excel sheet and I press “ctrl+m” the realista windows appears.. but when i select the input range the message in italian is:
“Errore di compilazione nel modulo nascosto: ‘Analysis’. Questo errore si verifica in genere quando il codice รจ incompatibile con la versione, la piattaforma o l’architettura dell’applicazione.”
Do you know how to help me?
    I would appreciate.
    Maby thanks and best regards.

    • Marco,
Based on the results from the formula =VER() you have installed the version of Real Statistics designed for Excel 2016 on the Mac. Are you using Excel 2011? If so, you need to install the Excel 2011 version of Real Statistics instead of the 2016 version.
When you select AddIns from the Tools menu, do you see RealStats-2016 on the list with a check mark next to it? Do you see Solver on the list with a check mark next to it?

  45. Hi Charles,

I apologize for writing again but I could not find my previous post.
I have Excel 2011 on a Mac. I have repeated the installation instructions several times but to no avail. When I am in the Add-Ins dialog box, I check the Real-Stats box, and then after I click “OK”, I get the pop-up that states “Can’t find project or library”. When I click OK again, I get prompted for a RealStats password. Other than downloading the Add-In and moving it to the desired location, is there anything else I need to do before including it in the installed Add-Ins in Excel?

    Thanks again.
